“I am a 4G hotspot” reads the t-shirt embellished on a select number of Austin’s homeless population for the city’s upcoming South By Southwest Music Conference. As reported by Wired Magazine, the advertising agency Bartie Bogle Hegarty is sponsoring a concept program, entitled “Homeless Hotspots”, where homeless volunteers generate cash from hosting mobile 4G wireless hotspots for all the promoters, media types, wannabe rock stars and college students direly in need of a quick internet fix.
Noble idea or exploitative buzz-worthy measure? We’re on the fence ourselves.
