Underground hip-hoppers Death Grips have a reputation for sticking the middle finger firmly in the face of the copyright system. They released their first mixtape, Ex-Military, under a Creative Commons non-commercial license allowing people to copy, distribute, display, and build derivative works based on their music. Then, Epic records got the same treatment. Having signed them and barred them from releasing their next albums under a Creative Commons license, they found out that the three piece from Sacramento might not be so easy to subdue with most of The Money Store and the entirety of No Love Deep Web being leaked online regardless.
Catch them live in Berlin at Festsaal Kreuzberg on the 1st November and chip in €15 for a live performance and the three albums that they let you download, distribute and sample yourself for free.

Rhonda’s back in town tonight for a particularly muscular evening. Glasgow party duo Bicep descend upon Los Angeles to spin their distinct fusion of jacking, pumping disco and house. And if that’s not ideal for the fashion-show-cum-polysexual-gathering that is Rhonda, then have the knowledge that Heidi and Berlin’s very own Hunee will be backing up the show with their very own blend of aboriginal grooves. To grab a sampling of it all, head on over to Mount Analog where Bicep will be playing from 6-8pm to the tune of free drinks.
Check out their recent Beats in Space mix below, and more about tonight’s event here.

Decades after their brief yet influential career first ground to a sudden and mysterious halt, the Silver Apples remain one of pop music’s true enigmas: a surreal, almost unprecedented duo, their music explored interstellar drones and hums, pulsing rhythms and electronically-generated melodies years before similar ideas were adopted in the work of acolytes ranging from Suicide to Spacemen 3 to Laika. On Tuesday 11th at Festsaal Kreuzberg they buddy up with Brooklyn fuzzmongers Black Dice for an epic night of awesomeness from the outer limits. Don’t miss.

Much like steak preparation, appreciating art boils down to personal taste. Some like it raw and bloody, others prefer it dark and tough, and some have to chew it over for a while to truly get to grips with what the hell they’re dealing with.

So at the risk of receiving something you didn’t order, first flick though the visual preview above and get acquainted with the work of three Australian artists: Amanda Ceccato, Elliot Beaumont and Dord Burrough. Hosted by idrawalot, Medium Rare is a showcase of their latest work in a mash-up collaboration of their three personal and very different approaches to artistic expression.

The show runs until 22 September but of course opening nights are more fun. Get there for 19:00 sharp.

Medium Rare Vernissage  |  19:00, Thursday 6 September at Idrawalot, Berlin

It’s hot, it’s hip, and it only happens once a month. And in August, KooKoo—the famed underground party of Mieko Suzuki & Ara—moves from its standby location at Farbfernseher to Mitte’s Cookies with a lineup of Berlin’s haut monde. We here at Unlike are giving away two sets of two tickets each to the first people to re-tweet this news. Act now and it’ll only be a matter of time before you’re listening to the eclectic sounds of Aérea Negrot live while Elbee Bad showcases the DJ skills that earned him the moniker as the Prince of Dance. It all goes down on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 23:59 at Cookies.

A new installation at Corbusierhaus explores the similarity between that building and a near-identical one in France, Cité Radieuse, both built by architect Charles-Édouard Jeannere, better known as Le Corbusier.
LET THE USER SPEAK NEXT / DAS WORT HABEN DIE BENÜTZER / LA PAROLE EST AUX USAGERS is an exhibit that intertwines experience, sound, and space, in and around these modernist structures.
The Vernissage was on Aug. 23 at 19:00 and featured music by Berlin’s own experimental Ensemble Zwischentöne. Now, guided tours of the installation are available on select dates through the first weekend of September for €10 (€7 reduced). Email tickets@operdynamowest.org or call 030 40 98 31 95 to get in on the action. For detailed information, see the press release.

New France was originally the name for that land of maple leaves, hockey and the Mounted Police, but New Kanada is decidedly not to be found way up in the cold climes of North America. Led off by Adam Marshall, the London-based label has no real clear boundaries when it comes to focusing on its roster of artists that, all in all, play with a soulful yet simple, forward-driven energy. Tonight label boss Marshall alongside XI, Kevin McPhee and Jack Haighton push play to an evening of deeply-rooted sound at Loftus Hall.
Listen to McPhee’s most recent Resident Advisor podcast below. More info about tonight here.

It’s a family affair tonight as Group Doueh, an avant rock band from Western Sahara, takes the stage at Festsaal Kreuzberg’s summer fest. The four-piece is made up of the Baamar family and a friend, and they put a psychedelic spin on conventional notions of traditional African music. Using instruments native to their homeland—including the tinidit, lute, and tbal—alongside more classicly Western, electrically amplified devices, this desert blues band has been fusing Mauritanian rhythms and straight-up rock for years.

If you’ve been following Unlike over the past year, you may have come across this name: Steven Warwick. Under his Heatsick moniker, he’s played any number of venues, clubs, bars and galleries with his open, improvisational approach to house music alongside his uncanny use of a Casio keyboard in doing so. Yet being highly-informed in terms of art and aesthetic theory, he’s always sought a closer engagement to the world of visual arts and the ability to display his own work. He’s now found his opportunity, having partnered with the Kreuzberg art gallery Kinderhook & Caracas to hold his first solo show on August 1 titled “Sicherheitsdienst im Auftrag der BVG”. We had the opportunity to chat with him about his work, where he explained how BVG security practices relate to his broader aesthetic and political inclinations.
